Wesley Black, Perth’s prince of dynamic vocals and hard-hitting rap verses, returns to our sound waves trading in his signature trap and electronic hip-hop beats for a more acoustic styled swagger, in the new song, ‘King Of The World’.
The musician has built up his career since his debut, garnering much attention from the likes of Triple J, Triple J Unearthed, Cool Accidents, Tone Deaf, Pilerats, Scenestr, MILKY, Aus Music Scene and more. Since his early days, he has solidified his sound to be ever-changing and the songwriter himself adapting to the ebb and flow of his discography to accurately represent his skills and artistry. Pilerats said it best; “... songs like ‘OUTLAW’! and ‘Eleven’ are glimpses of his brilliance in its best form shown thus far, showing his craft as a multi-faceted emcee that can move between flavours and energies with ease."
His new track, ‘King of The World’, allows space for Black to fully showcase his vocals, whether that be rapping or showing off his vocal range. The campfire-esque acoustic guitar found the base of this song and although it teeters on the edge of a more chilled out vibe with this decision, the rapper makes sure to stand his ground with hard-hitting lyrics and the flow conveyed through his own voice.
That being said, ‘King Of The World’ is all about exploring a more vulnerable side to songwriting for the musician. The lyrics as a whole are described as a pessimistic love song, one where you aren’t able to realize your own worth without the presence of another. Wesley Black goes on to explain; "’King of the World' is a song I wrote about finding someone who can make you feel special, even in your darkest days. It’s about the time I felt weakest, and struggled to find anything of value in my life, until I found someone special. Somehow no matter how bad things got in my own world, I could always feel like the king of the world by her side, and I can only hope I did the same in return.”
