Randa and The Soul Kingdom are about to drop their new single - ‘Is This I’ on Friday Nov 12th, alongside their music video clip which has won them ‘Best Music Video Clip’ for Revelation Film Festival. The music video (produced and directed by Amy Ruth Gibbs) is a kaleidoscope of colour and motion that reflects the song’s questions about identity and its upbeat drive in a fun and eye-catching package. There’s never a dull moment! The artwork for ‘Is This I’ pays tribute to Randa’s Middle Eastern heritage with a depiction of the Egyptian goddess Isis, who protected women and children, and healed the sick.
"This song was created for the dance floor. It’s got a driving beat that’s reminiscent of Motown but with a modern twist. There’s a lot of energy, it’s got it’s own kind of mojo, particularly with the wailing vocal call and response from the horn stabs, climaxing towards the end of the song. You can hear James Brown’s influence creeping in with the vocal wailing too. I wanted to write a song that reminded me a little of On The Road from our debut album as it was one of my favourites. The lyrics are deliberately ambiguous. It appears that the song is about a conversation between a girl and a boy, but it’s more than that. In fact, it was inspired by observing animals being confused by their reflection. They have no concept of themselves. That made me think about how we as humans are often unable to recognise ourselves in our own lives. It’s a comment on human behaviour and how blind we can be to our own existence.” - Randa Khamis It’s been 12 years since Randa And The Soul Kingdom released their first single Not Gonna Let You off their debut self-titled album on London’s Freestyle Records.
