Skyuka is the ethereal stage persona of Perth born Vanessa Raspa. Having just released her latest single ‘When Your Light Is Low’ she is ready to launch into 2020 kicking it off at El Grotto this Friday. Read the touching story behind the track and her journey so far
After spending much time in both Sydney and Perth, Vanessa has collaborated with other artists in original shows as well as theatre shows, which has seen her share the stage with the likes of Kira Puru, Mojo Juju, Mariam Sawires, 30/70 and Pirra.
In mid 2018 Vanessa decided to go solo, concentrating on producing her own music and creating a live show. Thus was born SKYUKA. The result is a fusion of electronic pop, hip-hop grooves, trap, dirty synth sounds and a voice that explores many registers. Heralded as a captivating performer with an electrifying stage presence, the songs of SKYUKA explores themes of love, alcoholism and grief. Yet they all have a sense of resolve… ‘The heart lives on.’ Vanessa was kind enough to share with us the touching story behind her latest single; “Originally I had a couple of other musicians accompanying me at my gigs and sadly one passed away suddenly in November last year. Then on the morning of his birthday THIS year, I had the entire melody (from start to finish) of ‘When Your Light Is Low’ come to me at about 5am. I was half asleep but still managed to record it with my iPhone. Then a few weeks later I decided to write the track about him and the lyrics just flew out of me. I loved the track so much I decided it had to be the single.” Don’t miss the chance to see her live! El Grotto, this Friday the 3rd of January with Brayden Sibbald and San Solis, more details here.
