On the up and up, Ruby May has shown no sign of stopping, coming back with new single ‘justanotherwav’.
Considering the musician’s history in theatre and well-rounded music career, Ruby May has grown to be multifaceted in both solo and group performance, impressing audiences every time with their stage presence and musical talents. Earlier this year, the singer released a collaboration piece with Hyclass, another Perth hip-hop talent that has taken the city by storm, called ‘ABSENTEE’.

Considering your extensive background performing within Perth’s music industry, you must have collaborated with a lot of artists up until now. Are your musical collaborations brought about by prior friendships, a desire to collaborate or a mix of both?
I would certainly say its a mix of both. Predominately and my personal preference is to have an organic connection or vibe and to go from there. It can be really challenging working with someone if you’re not on the same page or don’t have the same values in line.
Most of my upcoming releases are collaborations of some kind. I would say my entire music project is a giant collaboration in a way. Its never really just me.
Collaborating is something I really really love doing - improving and singing over beats is something I love and that stemmed from baby Ruby’s love of music. Switch the dial back to 2013, lighting incense and putting on a Soulection mix via Soundcloud and diving for beats to sing on was something I adored doing.
Its always an absolute treat working with someone else and cooking up a whole new sauce with all juices infused.

Now back with a solo piece this time, Ruby May is excited for people to hear ‘justanotherwav’. But don’t be fooled, this song is way more than just another wav file.

What inspired the title of your new song?
I am so happy you asked this - because honestly not a lot went into it haha. I struggled to put a title to this track for such a long time. Originally it was called MOULDING, that was just because of the lyrical content but something about the word moulding.. I just couldn’t run with because I could not stop thinking about those dark gloomy shower edges in my first rental on Karrinyup Road.
I thought justanotherwav went down a treat, because I have been making so much music it really went into a file with all the other wavs ya’know?
Anyway, that didnt really sit right so the great morphing of this track title begun.. it went from MOULDING to justanotherwav to MOULDING to Mends St to justanotherwav to Shaping.Growing.Mending to Shaping to justanotherwav and then after so many variations of words on words on wavs ….. I guess we know the ending of the story and how it landed hehehe

The song immediately greets us with an addictive hip-hop inspired drum line, backed by dreamy synth lines and Ruby May’s signature hazy vocals. This song really stands as a testament to the artist’s influences that span across various genres, as this song stands as a very intuitive mix of elements from different genres. Ultimately the song presents itself as a head bobbing hit that sits between bedroom pop and a more upbeat lofi beat.

Can you explain the creative/recording process of ‘justanotherwav’?
This one was a simple cook up! Jack is a great human to work with - we hadn’t collaborated before within a music capacity but have both been super active on the scene for so many years.
I had spoken with him about a production journey I was going to embark on and it went from there. We had a session and Jack made the initial beat super quickly, while he was cooking that up I wrote the hook and a bunch of lyrics and melodies…. The flow was genuine all round and well it was really easy to piece together the track from here.
I find when the ideas flow and creating comes easily within a collaboration, thats a great little pocket to sit in and vibe out.
After letting it sit for a while, ( marinate for a month or so which I find is just as much part of the process as the rest) we had one other session just to finish off vocals and to add and subtract from what we had.
The track was then given to my homie from Melbourne, TURBO CHOOK who mixed and mastered this after a few discussions with myself on final nuances to the sound.
