Two of Perth’s well known names, Ruby May and Hyclass, have just dropped their new track ‘ABSENTEE’ after much anticipation! This release sees a new emergence for Ruby May in particular. She has returned with her signature “doona groove” to set the tone for your listening experience: “futuristic, envision R&B falling in and out of house grooves and lo-fi dreams.”
Ruby May is a musician who aspires to “evolve with the ebb and flow of life.” Multifaceted in solo and group performance, the artist takes inspiration from names such as Erykah Badu, Jordan Rakei and 30/70; resulting is a sonic fusion of R&B, house grooves and just a sprinkle of lo-fi vibes. May’s partner in crime on the new song, Hyclass, joins in as one of the most sought after female hip hop artist’s within Perth’s local scene. Not only does she have a well-founded career in music, but also shown her prowess on the stage for the popular play ‘SUGAR’ which had a very successful run in the Perth Fringe Festival in 2018. She has built quite the repertoire and reputation over the years, which only speaks to her ever growing talent as a well-rounded artist.
‘ABSENTEE’ is a track whose conception started back when Ruby May and Hyclass were on a national tour with Abbe May to celebrate ‘Fruit’ on vinyl. During their stop in Melbourne, the pair had a studio session with good friend Allan McConnell, otherwise known as Turbo Chook (Close Counters, MALLRAT, DUCKWRTH & more). It only took a matter of 2-3 hours to lay down the basis of the song and here we are nearly two years later for the release! To celebrate the new release, Ruby May is holding an event on July 10 at Subiaco’s newest coffee shop, Fornever, where you’ll be able to listen to ‘ABSENTEE’ and other music curated by the musician herself! You’ll also be able to grab some artwork created by May and maybe a snack or two if you’re feeling peckish. It’s anticipated to be a lovely morning with the aid of music and vegan cinnamon buns - don’t be shy and go on down to enjoy the vibes! Click here to find out more. Their next band show will be down at Mojos on the 30th of July in support of People Taking Pictures along side Yomi Ship. Both events sound amazing and worth putting in your calendar now! More info on the Mojos show here. Before you do though, don’t forget to listen to ‘ABSENTEE’ below! Crystal Moonsamy
