After taking some time out to record and produce more music, local Perth band Lakesider are riding their wave of success with their recent single ‘You’re On Your Way’ to bring you their newest track, ‘Ghosted’.
The local Perth rock band started out as simple jam sessions beside a small lake, involving Sean Eamer (vocals/rhythm guitar) and Luke Scata (drums/percussion). Before long, the band expanded to include members Giancarlo Marra (lead guitar) and Owen Besant (bass) as well, which ended up to be the band Lakesider you know today.
In 2016, the five-piece band debuted with single ‘Nervous Wreck’, followed by an 11 track EP titled ‘Double Vision’, a project that showcased their sound at the time. This EP garnered much acclaim and earned them a spin on the ‘Short, Fast, Loud’ segment on Triple J which really set them on the map. Fast forward to just earlier this year, they released single ‘You’re On Your Way’; “a hard hitting rock song about self-acceptance, growing up and navigating all of the hardships that come your way in life”, says the band. This single also marked their music video debut on Youtube - this song has become their most listened to on Spotify and earned many rave reviews by fans on Triple J.
What was the reason behind almost a five-year break between the 'Double Vision' EP and this year's single releases?
The break in the releases was predominantly because life was getting pretty busy between full time studies, full time work (and part time study), and going from living at home to being functional (or at least – semi functional) adults. Our song writing was also changing a lot during the period, so there were a lot of songs which got written and abandoned while we tried to find our favourites. Lastly, Covid probably delayed everything by about 6-12 months as we were able to record in the studio together, as well as lockdown’s/ the bush fires/ car troubles impacting our first music video.
Whilst basking in the success of their EP, the band had gone one to support many big names in the industry, such as Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Citizen and Tigers Jaw along with many Australian artists as well, like Amy Shark, Ceres and Hockey Dad, to name a few.
What was it like supporting so many big names in the industry?
Being able to open for international bands will always be a highlight for us. It’s something that will always bring us joy and will be engrained in our memories which we will be talking about for many years to come. It also fuelled our desire to keep writing music and playing more live shows.
Now Lakesider is back and refreshing our ears with new music and a new music video to go with it!
What was the inspiration behind the 'Ghosted' music video?
We often joke that the song sounds like it could be used on a rom-com movie soundtrack, so we wanted the music video for Ghosted to be light hearted and a bit of fun while also giving a visualisation of that. When we were brainstorming ideas as a group, making the music video revolve around us having a bad time at a party became the clear winner as it allowed us to capture a few different situations where you end up feeling literally ghosted or like a bit of a social misfit (which gives off a similar feeling of disappointment). We also thought it would be great to make it a throwback to the classic 1990’s/ early 2000’s high school comedies.
What is 'Ghosted' about?
The song tries to capture the flow on effects that come with being ghosted (or at least, the thoughts and the emotions). The idea for the song didn't stem from any specific experience but can be associated to any time you feel rejected or left hanging (whether it be to do with love, your career, with your passions, or even amongst friends).
Following the release of ‘Ghosted’, Lakesider want to celebrate along with all of their fans by doing what they do best and performing live! There will be three shows to accompany their single which will be at:
YMCA HQ All Ages with Detour, Sub Zero, Akimbo (June 25) Lynott's Lounge with The Frauds, Zorah, Scatterback (June 26) Brighton Hotel Mandurah with The Frauds, My Shadow, Aquarius Rage (July 2)
What else can we expect from you guys in the future?
Ghosted is our second single off of our upcoming EP 'Full Circle', which we’ll be celebrating its release with a few shows at the end of June (see above for dates and venues). We’ve already got another music video ready to drop soon for the third single, and the rest of the EP will be out shortly after. There are also plans for some regional tour dates – so keep a lookout for when that gets announced. Beyond this year, we’ve already started writing more songs and can’t wait to go back and record more music, playing more shows, and sharing the stage with bigger and bigger acts, because regardless of what comes of it all, it’s what we love doing.
Be sure to check out ‘Ghosted’ below and check their Facebook page for more information on the release tour!
