After releasing a string of singles since their conception in 2019, King Brown are here to showcase what they’ve been working hard towards for a while - their debut EP ‘Out In The Desert’!
The classic rock band hold a formidable resume of singles that they’ve released until recently, including hits such as ‘Bones’ (December 2020) and ‘Way Down’ (April 2021), both of which have great reviews on Triple J. They credit a mix of old and new influences such as The Rolling Stones and the Allah-Las for influencing their style of rock that they have strengthened over the years. The single ‘Way Down’ is actually the band’s most recently released single that was most likely used as a teaser for the EP. The traction this track got was nothing short of amazing, garnering attention from fans and presenters alike, most notably from Double J and Triple J. Dan Condon of Double J comments on the track, “...When their new single 'Way Down' kicks in, it does so with a big, snaking guitar-riff that proceeds to run through the song for its duration. That guitar line might be huge, but the rest of the song is far more restrained as the band adopt a laid back feel that is at odds with its main motif but somehow gels all the same.”
King Brown consists of 4 members - brothers Ash (lead guitar) and Shaun Kennedy (rhythm guitar/backing vocals), Brendon Cross (drums/lead vocals) and Ben Salmin (bass/backing vocals). As well as being a talented drummer, Salmin also spearheaded the recording and production of this album at Bun Chic Studio in Claremont. The band says, “...It’s super handy to have Ben record and produce the EP, there’s no pre booking or timeline pressures, we just rocked up and recorded each night whenever we were free. We’d work during the day then most weeks head over to Ben’s to record til’ late.” The record was then wrapped up for mixing at Debaser Studio by Andy Lawson and mastered by Simon Struthers at Forensic Audio Mastering. ‘Out In The Desert’ is an EP whose origin began towards the end of lockdown last year. The band says they had a few songs they had written in 2019 up their sleeve for this project and the rest had come together when they were able to start working together again in the middle of last year. This EP commanded a lot of focus from the band and this was reflected when they had chosen to take a break from performing for a while and really just nail down on the project. King Brown comments, “it’s very exciting to finally be able to release a large body of work. Most of the songs we’ve been playing for a while, a couple even from very early days of the band, so we’re really looking forward to putting them out there.” This collection of work has a versatile sound - the band showcases their sonic range from “high energy rock” (‘Moto’) to a cool, more land back vibe (‘Oyzo’). The flavour they bring to the table is something that they’ve grown into as a band over the years and they are super excited to bring these songs out to the public. Make sure to give ‘Out In The Desert’ a listen below and make sure to look out for future live gigs from this amazing rock band! Crystal Moonsamy
