INTERVIEW: NEW TO THE SCENE SOPHIAN DELIVER SUNNY DRIVE TUNE 'HONEY' A TRACK ENCOURAGING SELF LOVE8/30/2022
Led by front man Sophian Manik (Young Robin) and brand new to the scene, Sophian are the next indie pop-rock band you need to get to know! Following their debut 'In Love', 'Honey' is a track about grieving past friendships and learning to discover and practice self love.
Consisting of Tyler, Finn & Julia, they are highly skilled and experienced musicians who collide a variety of influences from Kings of Leon to Coldplay, Spacey Jane and Jeff Buckley to create a dynamic, genre fusing and energetic performance. Not ones to be missed, Sophian promises to bring you on a journey with them through skilful storytelling and their warm and vibrant presence.
I am pretty excited to hear this new venture for you being such a big fan of Young Robin! How has it been so far taking over your own project? It was pretty daunting at first to be very honest. Trying to figure out where to start and how to get the project up and running. But once I actually got a plan together and some friends who were keen to jump on this project and give it a go, it kind of all came together. Since January this year we have managed to release 2 singles so far, have some stacked launch shows and jump on board supporting some amazing local artists as well. It's been really fun just exploring a different sound and style as well. This project has really allowed me to tap into and create music which has shaped me as a musician myself. In life you will come across people from all ends of the world. Some who will stay and some who won’t. Sometimes, the people who decide not to be in your life can leave you feeling quite low and doubting your self worth. You go through a grieving process but at the same time you also come out of it stronger and being a better version of yourself. In simple words, this song is all about self love. 'Honey' is such a driving tune, I can imagine cruising down the coast or in the hills to this on a beautiful sunny day. In theme to the tracks meaning those moments can be some of the most freeing if you're on your own. How has the response been to the new track? Absolutely agree. That's something we really wanted to encapsulate in this song. That positive energy. The response so far has been very great. The sound of the song is slightly different from our debut track we released earlier in the year, but it still encompasses a lot of those foundational sounds. It's really cool to see people accepting and vibing out to a song that you have put so much love into creating! We recorded this song with Sam from Tone City Records. We have always wanted to work with Sam and we couldn’t be more stoked with how the song came out. This is the second song we have released as a band and Sam really helped bring out the best out of the song. He is so involved in the process and really guides you. An absolute please to work with. We hope to be working with Sam for a long time to come. Sam Ford's work is always incredible, were there any notable moments in the studio you could share? So we really have to give Sam a massive pat on the back for this one. You are absolutely right in that he is incredible to work with and he is so kind and really takes the time to understand you and your project. When we went to record this song, Sam had just hurt his back not too long ago and was struggling quite a bit. Despite all of this, he powered through and really made sure we had our song done on time and did an excellent job on it! So that was definitely a highlight for us! Just knowing how much he cares about his work! Not to mention, he has the best dog ever! Mr.brown. He is the best. He chilled with us the whole time and maybe even helped us play a note or two on the guitar haha! Besides the single launch coming up, what is in the near future for Sophian? Yeah, so we will be jumping back into the studio to record new music! That has and is a big goal for us for the year, to write and record as much music as we can. We will also be looking at hopefully getting together an EP sometime in next year, jump on some festivals and then fingers crossed, hopefully look at touring around Australia! Get that first tour under the belt you know and then just keep building upwards and onwards from there!
