After a long wait, Donna Iverson finally launched her debut EP ‘Hidden Gem’ with a full-band show down at Mojo’s Bar Fremantle last weekend. Donna’s music is refreshing and soul-cleansing, her dreamy folk pop provides a frame for her melodically rich arrangements, combining lush Beatles-like hooks with warm nostalgic harmonies. Vocal harmonies and percussion are provided by her main collaborator Kate Jensen to compliment the pieces.
The leading single from Donna’s EP is ‘Black Diamond’, a song that feels like coming home. The bright and cheery guitars provide that Beatle-esque aesthetic that charms and comforts you at the same time, and the lyrics invoke the relief of coming back to the sanctuary of shared intimacy in rough times. Donna’s smokey vocals lace seamlessly with the harmonies of long-time collaborator Kate Jensen to create catchy hooks that worm their way into your ear.
‘Hidden Gem’ is an EP of pure comfort food. Donna shows her pedigree of musicianship as she slips neatly into the tradition of indie-folk singer-songwriters like The Waifs and Sufjan Stevens, writing songs about life and love that are endlessly relatable and bring people together in simple joy. The 'Hidden Gem' EP is available for digital download on Donna’s bandcamp. You can check out the leading single ‘Black Diamond’ below. Gerard Kinsella
