Photography - Sarsby Martin Proudly unique three-piece band, Grand Casual, jump right back into the spotlight with a new tour to promote their latest single ‘Spaced’, following the successful release of the single ‘Sway’ which debuted earlier this year. Based in Esperance, Grand Casual is made up of members Matt Cooper (guitar), Joe Franzone (drums) and Kyron Smithson (vocals). The band have an impressive track record of song releases as well as live performances under their belt. Once Perth was back on its feet late last year, Grand Casual’s schedule was packed with live performances in October - including multiple sold-out gigs at venues such as the Indian Ocean Hotel, playing alongside The Floors, Little Lord Street Band and Car Park Social in Fremantle and ending their live giglist with a bang at Karnivool in Kalgoorlie, also supporting some big names in the Perth music scene. Once the new year was rung in, the band showed no signs of slowing their momentum and continued on to play at There Goes The Sun Festival in January and then at the Nannup Music Festival on the Tigerville stage. At this time, the musicians were also promoting the release of their first single of the year, ‘Sway’. The release of this song was planned to coincide with their stage at Nannup Music Festival, which turned out to be a great move because it has since been marked their most successful single release to date! The band is now releasing ‘Spaced’ as a testimony to all the anxiety and uncertainty we were all feeling around a year ago during the height of the pandemic in Perth, which coincidentally was when it was also written. “Lyrically it is an abstract tune though at its heart is a discussion about our relationship with the people around us and how they influence our mental state. I feel we all have moments where we detach from reality, detach from our family and loved ones, the COVID Pandemic amplified this in negative and positive ways,” says the band. The lyrics in the chorus really bring this concept to life; “Slow Down, Feels like we been looking at the earth from space, in the here and now. Holding on, you have a very familiar face, in the here and now.” Andy Lawson at Debaser Studio really helped the members glue the pieces of this song together during the recording and mixing process. “I remember laying down the vocals and thinking to myself “this is my cleanest work yet” prior to ducking out of the studio for a casual break. On returning Joe, Andy and Matt had added a stunning replay of the lyric “rewind” that falls in the tracks frenetic bridge, a finishing flourish which marked the end of a most enjoyable tracking process.” The single ‘Spaced’ is a toe tapping tune that is perfect to listen to during those long drives in the rainy weather lately - once you get to know the lyrics well enough, you’ll be singing along to the hook just like I have been! To celebrate the release of this track, the band is heading on tour from August 5 - 14 up the coast! For information about the tour, make sure to check out this link. Crystal Moonsamy
