The triple threat musician, guitarist and activist Ezereve released her powerful single ‘Well Groomed’ on May 28. Although it seems like a foot tapping song by itself, the lyrics and meaning of the song speak of a bigger issue here in Perth.
Ezereve, described as a “folkish Norah Jones with a bit of sass”, is a passionate performer who has mastered the act of doing it all! If she isn’t recording or writing her own songs, you can find her performing at weddings or for a charitable cause. She has built up quite the repertoire of experiences and achievements during her extensive career, including performing as a guest soloist for the Perth Symphony Orchestra, being endorsed by Godin guitars and releasing an album titled #BFFme, where all proceeds went towards the Walk Free Foundation that combats modern day slavery - the end result was a total of 50K raised in charitable funds!
The musician has released multiple albums where she has used the sales to back important causes and this time it is no different with new single, ‘Well Groomed’. This song “focuses on bringing awareness to sexual misconduct in the music industry and calls out men in positions of power that take advantage of female musicians.” Even though Ezereve is calling out all men who manipulate their influence in this vile way, she also manages to bring it back to her home turf and acknowledges that this kind of power abuse unfortunately happens right under our own noses within Perth’s tight knit music community.
The song is based on the singer’s own unfortunate personal experience that has affected her greatly - she was dealing with a severe case of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) that resulted in her attending therapy for an extended amount of time and this eventually lead to her writing and releasing this song as a testament to her mental struggle and strength demonstrated throughout her ordeal. She says, “this song isn’t about revenge. I’ve been to therapy to heal from this and want to spare others the heartache by not having to go through it. I hope this can be shared especially with up and coming singers to prevent this happening again.”
