Ash Digs' EP, 'Tapes of You' takes listeners on a heartfelt journey through the five stages of grief. The EP showcases Ash Digs' transition from established instrumentalist to a singer-songwriter, with a focus on truth, honesty, and emotional relatability.
Fusing elements from a wide range of genres, this EP showcases the passion in songwriting and production for Ash Hosken, the multi instrumentalist artist behind the moniker Ash Digs. Throughout the past 2 years of writing and producition for the EP, Hosken explores the five stages of greif with his story telling and intense emotion conveyed through the elements of production.
The title track and first track of the EP 'Tapes of You' sets the tone with the sound of a tape being inserted into a player, enveloping listeners in a melancholic atmosphere and creating a sense of presence. Ash Digs' vocals, combined with indie and folk elements, create a sense of introspection and raw emotion. The track beautifully captures the the EPs theme with haunting melodies and thought-provoking lyrics.
'All Dressed Up' delivers a punchy blend of slow burn beats and understated electronica, showcasing Ash's ability to craft infectious rhythms. Dark and dreamy guitar riffs carry throughout this track almost like a bed gently rocking you to sleep. The expressive lyrics sung by the smooth and intricate vocal layering are the cherry on top of this stand out track for me.
'Take a While Longer' was the debut single off the EP, a great insight into the new project and what was in store. Ash Digs' musicality shines through in this introspective piece, as he skilfully combines elements of downtempo vibes, and electronica. The track's contemplative atmosphere and soulful vocals offer a glimpse into the complexities of this emotional stage.
As the EP progresses, Ash Digs leads us into a track that feels a little lighter with 'You & I'. The track beautifully captures subdued melodies and highlights the psychedelic genre with vocals that nod to The Beatles or Tame Impala, creating a captivating listening experience. The EP concludes with 'Lately' which offers a cathartic release from the previous emotional depths and continues with the infusing psychedelic vibes and hip-hop programming. This track provides an uplifting and chilled conclusion to the EP and creates a beautiful sense of closure.
Overall, 'Tapes of You' showcases Hoskens growth as an artist, with each track presenting a unique blend of genres and styles. The EP is a testament to his ability to craft deeply personal and relatable music while exploring universal themes. With this release, Ash Digs has firmly established himself as an artist to watch, and we can look forward to future EPs and singles that build upon his distinctive style.
